About The Position

Our investment analysts operate in a relatively flat and lean structure with high levels of interaction across the investment team, partners, and with the management teams of our portfolio companies. HCAP is a vibrant learning environment where questions and dissenting opinions are welcome. Our team consists of investment professionals from a variety of professional and cultural backgrounds.
The investment analyst role is an integral part of our team. As highlighted in Key Responsibilities, the role is dynamic and spans across portfolio monitoring and reporting, new investment analysis, and general support functions for the broader investment team.
Key Responsibilities
The key responsibilities of the analyst role include the following:
Assess New Investment Opportunities:
- Review teasers to assess fit against our investment criteria
- Deep dive into Offering Memorandums / Confidential Information Memorandums
- Conduct thorough industry research and market mapping
- Assess the opportunity’s alignment with our Gainful Jobs Approach™
- Analyze historical financial data and forecast future performance
- Understand and assist in structuring deals and appropriate leverage metrics
- Create and manage models (LBOs / Comparable & Precedents)
- Assist and prepare sections of investment memos and presentations for Investment Committee
- Participate in the due diligence process
- Generate presentations and support management of data rooms for any external co-investors / lenders
Portfolio Company Monitoring and Support:
- Gather, assess, and standardize monthly portfolio company financial reports.
- Assist in quarterly valuations by setting up valuation spreadsheets, updating public and private comps, and providing relevant context to deal leads.
- Track and analyze the performance of portfolio companies against their budgets
- Prepare monthly performance update reports for internal team
- Support preparation of quarterly LP reports
- Track and support progress across the Gainful Jobs Approach™
- Assess market trends of various portfolio companies and stay on top of industry news
- Create add-on opportunity lists and analyze such opportunities
- Attend weekly / monthly calls with portfolio companies
- Adhoc portfolio company projects
Other Responsibilities:
- Ensure CRM system is up-to-date for portfolio review sessions
- Participate and present to broader investment team on new opportunities
- Oversee interns’ day-to-day tasks
- Stay on top of broader industry dynamics (debt markets, equity markets, etc.)
- Participate and engage in impact events
- Take part in business development calls alongside investment team
Qualifications
- 1-2 years of relevant experience in investment banking, private equity, or private credit – including internships
- Strong academic background including Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance or similar focus
- Ability to work on deliverables and projects alone
- Great excel and modeling skills
- Understanding of capital structure and leveraged buyouts
- Proficient in Word and PowerPoint
- Organized, detail-oriented, pro-active, self-driven, and self-motivated
- Interest in impact investing
- Willing to work full-time in-person in San Diego, CA
- Knowledge or experience in the healthcare space is a plus
